Lesley Skeates

After graduating in Fine Art from Aberystwyth University, Lesley first followed a successful career in medical illustration, which eventually brought her to Edinburgh. She now works full-time painting landscapes and floral pieces in oils.

Lesley is happiest immersed in the countryside, nestled beneath a tree or at the water's edge, painting directly from nature. She loves the solitude and peace that nature affords.

“I paint to share this experience - the warmth of the sun on my back, the bird song or the splash of jumping fish.” she says. “I’m sitting so quietly that occasionally I glimpse a kingfisher, or startle an unsuspecting deer that has wandered too close.”

She is attracted by the stark contrast of dark, shady places and light effects playing on water. Painting outside can bring its challenges, but also rich rewards. Lesley aims to complete a painting in one sitting before the light changes and the colours fade, often a race against time.
