Santé
1st June - 9th July 2022

Cheers! Salut! Down the hatch! Prost! Bottoms up! Cin cin! ‘Santé’ is a toast we use to drink to each other’s health, and our ‘good health’ has been a major preoccupation for many of us over the last few years. However you say it, good health is what we all wish for ourselves and our friends. This new solo exhibition by Michael Clark captures life’s small but much missed celebrations. These paintings – outdoor scenes drenched in sunshine; still moments in a quiet café; lazy market days and strolls with friends or family pets – get to the heart of how many of us have looked after others and been looked after ourselves in recent times. These subtle works, layered with paint and imbued with meaning, offer refuge and companionship in our homes, reminding us of good times in the past and happy times to come. As life returns to normal, Michael’s desire to visit old haunts and discover new ones reflects how many of us are feeling.

Michael G Clark RGI RSW PAI

Michael G Clark graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1983.

He visited Paris for the first time in 1980, walking for miles, drinking in the atmosphere and revelling in the style of the city and its people. He loved the cafés and the streets – the different iconography the city had to offer. This love for Paris and the South of France is clearly reflected in his paintings, using an accomplished technique which creates an affectionate impression of his subject in a minimalist style. This same love translates in equal measure to many other subjects and locations, whether a canal-side restaurant in Venice, or the banks of the River Doon in his native Ayrshire.

Working from a studio at the top of his house in Ayrshire, Michael Clark continues to build upon a growing following for his work through solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK.
