Hazel Vellacott

Hazel Vellacott

Hazel Vellacott works from her studio in the Pentland hills – a space packed with all kinds of resources that she squirrels away until they inspire, or find their way into a new piece of work creating an almost dream-like scenario. Lately, birds and their homes have been a theme for her paintings and sculptures, often as a metaphor for reflection on current medical practice.

She works with traditional as well as modern materials to make her paintings, often incorporating printmaking in her mixed-media technique. Underpinning her creative process is the discipline of drawing from life. Her sketchbooks are constant companions and an essential part of her investigatory process.

She began her study of life-drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art, and then went on to study painting at Leith School of Art. She is an elected professional member of Visual Arts Scotland. Recent prizes include The Russell Trust Award
