Catherine Sargeant SSA presents a selection of artworks in paint and print created over the past decade. ‘So many words, so many ways to create. I collect words from various sources: individual favourite words, quotes from the great and good, dictionary definitions, the list goes on. I also have a great love of the ampersand in its various fonts. On some works I’ve used a form of erasure/blackout poetry to alter the original text, often in collaboration with contemporary creative friends - writers, poets, musicians. Adding yet more layers to my work, both literally and metaphorically.’ Becoming more painterly in recent years, Catherine's latest work combines automatic and asemic writing, leaving an impression of abstracted words that allow the viewer to interpret, in the way one would deduce meaning from abstract art.

Catherine Sargeant SSA

Catherine Sargeant is a visual artist based in Scotland who uses text in her artworks. Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art during its Centenary year, she became the first recipient of WASPS new graduate award. Along with her art practice Catherine teaches various art classes and is a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists.

She finds words have an inherent beauty and is fascinated by the way we are saturated with text and communication in every aspect of our lives. Catherine aims to take this and create pieces that will simultaneously calm and intrigue the viewer. She uses various forms of printmaking often combining techniques within the one edition.
